Video Transcript of Water Quality

Good morning everyone. It’s Cameron here from Core Health Coaching. Hope you’re well. We have our health tip number 2 today. If you joined me for last week we talked a little abit about water. After I finished our Facebook Live, I worked out that  I didn’t cover a lot of the things that I wanted to. Today we’re going to talk about water quality.
Before I go into water quality, what I want to do is actually just recap on what we talked about last week. One of the things we talked about water is that it is the most important macro nutrient. There’s a whole heap of reasons around that like every metabolic process uses water. It was really critical that we get this one thing right. Hence why we talk about small changes on a regular basis. If you’re drinking more water from last week, well done, fantastic work. We covered why it was important, how it impacts the body. That was pretty critical. Also was the right amount for you. Everyone’s slightly different with that and we talked about body weight  and a number of adjustments to this as well.We talked about the right amount of water. Also, adjustments to that amount, and some extras that we could actually have with the water as well. If you’re interested in that video, it is attached below.
Water quality, doesn’t sound too sexy as a health tip, but to be honest given that it’s the most important macro nutrient, it’s really critical. Before I go too far down this path, I just wanted to clarify one thing. As we talk through today, I’m going to talk about some of the advanced techniques of having quality water and an understanding of some other things around water quality. It is important that you actually drink water first. Don’t be overwhelm by what we are saying today, just have water first and then once you’ve got that into a regular pattern, then start to improve the water quality.

What is water quality?

So there’s a couple of things that we need to be aware of with water quality. One, is we want to be free from toxins, chemicals, and heavy metals. We are so blessed in Australia that we don’t have the quality of water that is overseas, like China’s got a real problem with their water. We are lucky that we’ve go a really good source of water. But there are ways that we can improve the water quality.

Fluoride

We know toxins and chemicals leach into our water supply. So what we want to do is really improve that water quality. So there’s a couple of things that I’ll go through with that, but, look, I cannot move on until I talk about fluoride. There is a lot of commentary around fluoride. I personally don’t agree with fluoride in the water and there’s a couple of reasons why. The first one is that if I want fluoride in my water, I’d like to be able to choose it. And rather than having it forced on us for dental health, and I understand it, there’s a lot of research supporting dental health but fluoride is so difficult to get out of the water supply, you can have the best filters but it still difficult to get these toxins in our water supply. Apart from the whole conversation around fluoride if it is good, or is it bad. I just agree in the freedom of choice in regards to if I want it, I’ll put it in. If I don’t want it, don’t put it in for me. Definitely fluoride is a very topical issue. I would prefer it not to be in there. But at the same time is that I can understand some of the research but I would rather choose it.

Water Hardness

So for water quality, is the hardness of water . There’s a book called “Healthy Water’ by Martin Fox. He talks about water hardness on a regular basis. So he says that it should be over 100 mg/L.

TDS

The other thing to think about with quality of water is what we call TDSs. TDSs is Total Dissolvable Solids in your water. So predominantly these are minerals. So a water bottle, say for instance, on the back of it it will actually list your TDSs and how hard that is. So we’re looking at TDSs around 300 and predominantly it is around your mineral content. It’s rich minerals in your water. There is a whole head of information out here but at the same time, have an understand that quality of water is as important as quality of food. So water quality has so many different impurities into it, but TDSs, is about that mineral content. So if you’re getting all of your minerals from your water, means there’s not as much a heavy reliance on the food. That we have a lot of water during the day, it’s great to have really healthy water.

pH Balance

And there’s another part to water quality that is called pH balance. Now this is the alkalinity part of the water. So there’s a spectrum from 0 – 10. Zero being really acidic and 10 being really high in pH. The World Health Organisation says that our blood pH should be around a 7. So when we’re looking at water we need to be looking at a pH level of around about 8, as really good quality. Now sometimes you can get that on the back of different water bottles but definitely the TDSs will be listed.

Bottled Water

Great segue into talking a little bit about bottled water. Now bottled water has had some controversy. Should we have it in bottles, what’s the quality, and a number of companies have been caught just putting tap water into their bottles. A couple of brands that I can recommend are Evian and also Fiji water. I’ve personally had Fiji water from the source, which was absolutely fantastic. It flows into the Sigatoka River and you can just drink it from the creek, and it’s just absolutely beautiful. Both of these areas from Evian and Fiji are very low in environmental pollutants, so obviously the quality that you’re getting there is really quite good. Both of them have some really good TDS scores and the hardness is actually quite good, and also the pH balance as well.

BPA

But that’s half the story. Again with bottled water one of the things that we need to have a look at is the actual container that it’s in. Now, more people know a lot more about BPAs which it is about the petrochemicals of the plastic leaching into the water, so hence why they actually got rid of plastics with BPA to be more safer. These petrochemicals actually have a response in our hormonal system and it interrupts our endocrine system as well. They can really impact how the body actually works. So definitely the BPA free bottles are a little bit better but to be honest sometimes we’ve just replaced them with another plastic. Even though we don’t have research on those plastics, are they safer? Not really sure.

Metal and Glass Bottles

To cut the risk of petrol chemicals, is to have metal water bottles or glass water bottles. So I’ll do a plug there, metal water bottles, now if you can see this you might hear the sound? That’s stainless steel. There is also aluminium bottles but I would always stay with the stainless steel. I think that it’s actually a little bit better with any sort of toxins or heavy metals leaching into the water. So a great time to actually have a water, thank you.

Glass bottles don’t have a lot of contaminants that will impact the water as well. If you do have the plastic bottles, and remember drinking water is still better even if it’s in that little plastic, is try and avoid putting it in to direct sunlight. That’s where a lot of those petrochemicals will leach in to the water. So the more that you have those plastics in the shade is better.
You also have got some water bottles that actually have some filters in them. So with the filtered water bottles it’s whatever phase you’re are with your quality of water. Filters are better than no filters. But these filters in most water bottles are not as comprehensive as filtered water from Water treatment system.

Filtered Water

So again there is so much around water filters. There’s different strategies around water filters and what the right one is. There are many different systems available. I’m going to talk a little but about the water that I use, just because I’m quite passionate about it. I know it quite well. There seems to be a lot of things coming out more and more about water quality. Predominantly the reason to get a Water Treatment system for me was cost.

Cost

Buying bottled water, Fiji water, maybe $4 or $5 a bottle. Filtered water is significantly cheaper. So my current system averages to around about 6 cents a litre. So you can actually drink it, like it was free. That’s a novel concept. Drinking water through a filtered system should always be cheaper.

Different water treatment systems

And then it’s trying to work out which system. Now my water treatment system was fairly expensive up front but it’s obviously going to save you in the long term. So the ones that I know of, reverse osmosis used to be the gold standard. There’s some Ioniser filtered as well. This system revolved around trying to get a really high pH levels using electrical currents. To be honest that’s not my preference. I’d rather a more holistic view on trying to get the water as natural as possible.

Filtered and Mineralised Water Treatment System

So the system that I used is a filtered and mineralized system. So it goes through a 10 stage filtering process, and then it adds some minerals back in to it, and then pulls out the heavy metals. So to me that’s probably one of the best qualities that I can actually get. Now this is not a sales video but if you’re interested I have attached a link that I use.

https://www.corehealthcoaching.com.au/water-treatment-system/

When you’re buying one, have an understanding in relation to the size of the filtering process. So 0.2 to 0.05 microns is the best standard. (Showing a handout) So you won’t be able to see this too well but this is just having an understanding in regards to all the different minerals that are actually based in tap water. And even though our quality of tap water is significantly better than other places, we’ve still got some things to think about there. ORB, bioavailability, the minerals are in there, the heavy metals are there, but the big one is the THM chlorofilms.
I previously mentioned fluoride is very difficult to get out of the water so a system that gets this out of water is ideal. So the one  I was using again, with the 10 stage filtration, the ceramic is probably the most important stage, and that’s where we were talking about with the microns size. As well as the ceramic filter, there is activated carbon, silver to reduce bacteria growth, there’s natural stones that release calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, silicone and other trace elements. So there’s a lot of stuff that you can add in to the water. Don’t underestimate in regards to how critical water can be in relation to your overall health.
Now I’ve done this for plenty of, hundreds of clients in changing their water quality and they’re surprised at how much of a difference it makes. Our tap water is fairly good but there’s another level you can go to. So that’s all I’m suggesting here.
Okay, so just summarising, we have talked about is why water was important, bottled water, and filtered water. So they are the critical things that we have covered. Again I thank you for joining us.
The last thing, finalising, if you like this health tip, please share with others. We’ve also got a FREE health and fitness Facebook group.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/206488016481480/  So I’m just checking for any questions that people might have. I’m more than happy to take those. Any questions? Great, okay, well thanks for joining me, hope you’ve got some real benefit out of this video. So have a great day, and look forward to catching up with you soon. Bye.
